Mythology Monday: Monsters

http://thereadingrose.blogspot.co.uk/p/mythology-monday.html

Sphinx - Greek Mythology

Female monster with the body of a lion, breast and head of a woman, eagles wings and according to some stories the tail and head of a serpent.
She was sent by the gods to plague the town of Thebes for an ancient crime.
She prays on the youth, eating anyone who couldn't solve her riddle.
Oidipous accepted the challenge of the king to destroy the Sphinx for a large reward.
When he solved her riddle she threw herself off a cliff in despair as an oracle foretold.

In the spirit of the Sphinx here is a riddle for you....

How to train your dragon by Cressida Cowell (Baught this book yesterday so Look out for a review some time in the future!)

Review:
How to train your dragon has always been my favorite animation so when the sequel was released I was desperate to see it in the cinema. I went with my brother, his best friend and his friend's sister and it was a great afternoon out! This film was exciting and as always Toothless is just the cutest thing ever and it made me really want to have my own nightfury! I loved the beautiful animation with HD detail and the characters were just as lovable as they were in the first film. Sometimes with an animation sequel it is not as good as the first film and the plot becomes a little depleted but there was no sign of that in this film. The plot was set a few years in the future and was completely original. Hiccup got to meet his mother and Toothless became the Alpha dragon! With pretty blue glowing bits all over his body! There were lots of new and exciting dragons in this film with superb world building. Hiccup had to learn to face up to his responsibility of taking over his dad as chief, a very heartfelt part of the plot as you could feel his desire to explore and go on adventures in exchange for staying in Berk and dealing with the public. One part of the film was extremely sad however and nearly had me crying in public! It was such a shock and a death that is so rarely seen in children's animations. It was a heroric death however and it was lovely to see how it made the characters stronger and more capable of fighting! The love story between Hiccup's parents was beautiful and really sweet! It was nice to see the caring side of the tough viking!

Quotes:

"[Astrid to Hiccup] "Where have YOU been?" [Hiccup] "Oh you know. Catching up with mom." [Hiccup looks up. Astrid follows hos gaze and sees Valka on Clodjumper summoning her bewilderbeast] [Astrid] "THAT'S you MOTHER?" [Hiccup smiles] "well, now you know where I get my dramatic flair!" [He Flies off on Toothless]"
"[Hiccup draws a new spot on his map] "So, what should we name it?" [Toothless scratches his arm with his snout] [Hiccup] "Itchy Armpit it is."

August 12th: Top Ten Books I'm Not Sure I Want To Read.

1. The Vampire Diaries - L.J.Smith
Since L.J.Smith was replaced by ghost writers this series went from amazing to the most dreary, confusing thing I Have ever read. The Return: Nightfall is my cut off point. I am going to sell this book I think, even though I love the series so much it is now too confusing to read!
2. The Lord of the rings - J.R.R Tolkien
I want to read this as I loved the Hobbit but I have been told by many people that the lord of the rings are very long and boring and not worth reading. I'm now not sure what to think...
3. Dead as a Doornail - Charlaine Harris
I like these books but they are becoming very repetitive with a similar story in every one. Plus I found out that she never stays with Eric so I am unhappy about that as Eric is my favorite character. Sam is also very awesome but he doesn't even get a look in! So my frustration makes me unsure whether to read it or not.
4. Arizona - Eden Maguire
The writing style is terrible and the characters are annoying yet I really want to find out the results of the murder mystery plot...
5. Night Star - Alyson Noel
The romantic drama is becoming a bit dull now, but the world building is so superb I don't know if I want to give it up!

Goodreads Description: In this adventure, Annabeth encounters more oddities in the subway than usual, including a two-headed monster and a younger blond girl who reminds her a little of herself. This is the story fans have asked for, in which Annabeth Chase teams up with Sadie Kane. The demigod daughter of Athena and the young magician from Brooklyn House take on a larger-than-life foe from the ancient world. Perhaps even more disturbing than the power-hungry god they encounter is the revelation that he is being controlled by someone—someone all too familiar to Sadie. As a special bonus, the first chapter of THE BLOOD OF OLYMPUS, the final book in the Heroes of Olympus series, is included.

My Review:
I enjoyed this book, as always with anything written by Riordan. How awesome is it that Annabeth and Sadie met so soon after Percy and Carter and that there seems to be a huge plot that has been hinted at within both stories. These books would make on amazing book series so lets hope that Riordan creates one. I guessed correctly before that there would be a crossover book between the Egyptians and Greeks when it was hinted at a lot in the last Kane Chronicles books so lets hope this happens to... one can dream...
Annabeth and Sadie are both quirky and clever characters so when they came together they were so well matched. I loved the way that the addition of Egyptians to Annabeth actually confused her for once (That never happens!) where Sadie was very laid back about learning about the Greeks. I can't wait for all 4 characters to be baught together as I  bet a lot of comedy moments will happen! I love crossovers, even getting excited when one character crosses to a spin off on TV! So this book was just brilliant and I can't wait for the third one even though they are too short!!!!!!

Quotes:
"When weak, act strong.”
“No one is like me," Sadie agreed. "My amazingness is unique.”
"It’s just that each time my world gets stranger, I think: Right. We’re at maximum oddness now. At least I know the full extent of it. First, I find out my brother and I are descended from the pharaohs and have magic powers. All right. No problem. Then I find out my dead father has merged his soul with Osiris and Why not? Then my uncle takes over the House of Life and oversees hundreds of magicians around the world. Then my boyfriend turns out to be a hybrid magician boy/immortal god of funerals. And all the while I’m thinking, Of course! Keep calm and carry on! I’ve adjusted! And then you come along on a random Thursday, la-di-da, and say, Oh, by the way, Egyptian gods are just one small part of the cosmic absurdity. We’ve also got the Greeks to worry about! Hooray! ” Sadie Kane

Mythology Monday: Creation Myths

http://thereadingrose.blogspot.co.uk/p/mythology-monday.html

The Beginning of Life - Aboriginal Mythology

In the beginning everywhere was flat, bare and empty. However under the surface of Earth there were millions of creatures sleeping and dreaming pleasantly. One day Rainbow Serpent opened her eyes and found herself in complete darkness. She flexed out her coils and began pushing her way up to the surface. She burst out into the sunlight and set off to explore. Her strong winding body carved out valleys, heaping the land into mountains on either side. She carried this out for a long time until she had covered all of earth and returned to where she started. She rested a while as she was tired out. After her nap she realised that all the other creatures were all still asleep so she shouted with all the energy she had and many of the creatures began to stir. The frogs were first, delighted Rainbow Serpent tickled them until they laughed up the vast amounts of water stored in their bodies. Some of this water filled the grooves that Serpent had made on her travels creating streams, waterfalls, lakes and rivers. In the areas where water was absobed into the soil grass began to grow. Soon enough the land came to life. Rainbow Serpent led all the animals across the earth finding them suitable homes, she was made the mother of life and set rules to make sure the Earth remained as it was forever. The most excited animals about upholding the laws were made into humans and told to watch over  and look after the land, each with a totem pole of the tribe of animal species they came from. They were allowed to eat creatures from any totem pole other than their own, meaning there would always be enough food for everyone. Other creatures Serpent was proud of became rock to become guardians of the tribes. One man was especially wise and took great care of the earth. Rainbow Serpent did not let him die when he became old, instead turning him into a spirit to protect and watch over the tribes. Not long after he encountered evil, expelling that man from the tribe with the man soon becoming the evil spirit called Bunyip. Thus evil and fear was released into the lands.
